You Give them something To Eat
John 6:3 And Jesus walked up the mountainside and sat down there with His disciples.
John 6:4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was approaching.
John 6:5 Jesus looked up then, and seeing that a vast multitude was coming toward Him, He said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread, so that all these people may eat?
John 6:6 But He said this to prove (test) him, for He well knew what He was about to do.
John 6:7 Philip answered Him, Two hundred pennies' (forty dollars) worth of bread is not enough that everyone may receive even a little.
Jesus as usual is being followed by the crowds everywhere He goes people want to be near Jesus, just to touch Him. The time is Passover which means that almost all the shops will be closed now and there would be little hope of finding anywhere to buy food.
Also the crowd possibly expected Jesus to head over to Jerusalem and leave them for the feast.
Yet the Lord could see the needs of the people they do not want to lose sight of Him for a minute and the last thing on their mind is food. The Lord can see their obvious love for Him and their love of miracles Jesus is moved with compassion for them when He asks Phillip the question.
Realizing that Passover was almost upon them and all stores were now closed.
Jesus is almighty God in the flesh so to Jesus nothing is impossible; to Phillip who has been with Jesus from the beginning he is still limited by the natural and does not comprehend the awesome power of God so he looks to the money as not to God’s provision.
John 6:8 Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,
John 6:9 There is a little boy here, who has [with him] five barley loaves, and two small fish; but what are they among so many people?
The only other person they could see with food from whom they could buy was this small boy (we don’t know his name but his lunch is famous) and again they were limited by the perception in the natural. He also is a very famous boy because He gave all that he had to Jesus with no idea about what was about to happen. I mean would you give up your nice lunch of two fish and five barley loves, I don’t know many children who would but this is Jesus. We can only imagine the boy’s story when he gets home, Mum you know the lunch you packed me well Jesus made me share it with everyone. There were about five thousand men plus woman and children and look I bought home these twelve baskets of left overs.
John 6:10 Jesus said, Make all the people recline (sit down). Now the ground (a pasture) was covered with thick grass at the spot, so the men threw themselves down, about 5,000 in number.
Jesus had a plan, this was a revelation of Himself to the crowds, this truly was the impossible, no one had any idea at this point what Jesus was about to do and this set him apart from all those who had come before him. This miracle really moved the people, now he was not just touching one or two people here he was affecting everyone.
John 6:11 Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed {to the Disciples and the disciples} to the reclining people; so also [He did] with the fish, as much as they wanted.
Jesus met the need of the people, the word says as much as they wanted, people probably had the biggest meal ever, they couldn’t believe it there was no end to this food. They probably stocked up for the week, took food home for the whole family and friends.
John 6:12 When they had all had enough, He said to His disciples, Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost {and} wasted.
John 6:13 So accordingly they gathered them up, and they filled twelve [small hand] baskets with fragments left over by those who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
The disciples also were mightily moved by this miracle they too had never seen anything like this , but God did all this for a very special reason.
John 6:14 When the people saw the sign (miracle) that Jesus had performed, they began saying, Surely {and} beyond a doubt this is the Prophet Who is to come into the world!
John 6:15 Then Jesus, knowing that they meant to come and seize Him that they might make Him king, withdrew again to the hillside by Himself alone.
Now from this miracle came the revelation from Simon peter in Luke as to who Jesus is, this miracle is covered in all four gospels with Luke and Matthew leading to the revelation.
Luke 9:18 Now it occurred that as Jesus was praying privately, the disciples were with Him, and He asked them, Who do men say that I am?
Luke 9:19 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back to life.
Elijah was a reference point this miracle had been carried out by Him for a widow woman. (1 Kings 17:3 flour and oil not running out during famine.)
Luke 9:20 And He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am? And Peter replied, The Christ of God!
Luke 9:21 But He strictly charged and sharply commanded them [under penalty] to tell this to no one [no one, whoever he might be],
Matt 14:22 Then He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent away the crowds.
Matt 14:23 And after He had dismissed the multitudes, He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was still there alone.
Matt 14:24 But the boat was by this time out on the sea, {many furlongs} [a furlong is one-eighth of a mile] {distant from the land,} beaten and tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them.
Matt 14:25 And in the fourth watch [between 3:00--6:00 a.m.] of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
Matt 14:26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright.
Matt 14:27 But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid!
Matt 14:28 And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.
After witnessing the feeding of the 5000 peter believed Jesus could do anything.
Matt 14:29 He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus.
Matt 14:30 But when he perceived {and} felt the strong wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me [from death]!
Matt 14:31 Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught {and} held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
Matt 14:32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
Matt 14:33 And those in the boat knelt and worshiped Him, saying, Truly You are the Son of God!
Have you had that revelation yet, Just keep seeking Jesus and He will meet you in your need then you can kneel and say “truly you are the Son of God”.
God Bless
