Jesus is not superman He is much more!
How can we compare thee Jesus? An analogy that came to me is that we are all searching in our lives for someone or something to worship. It is human nature from the beginning of time the Lord refers to this as idol worshiping.
But what is your idol?
An idol is anything, which has taken the place of God in our lives, money, house, land, car, etc anything we have grown to love and even worship.
For what you love is where your heart is.
Mark: 12:30: And thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. Beware when you start making excuses for that which is not God but for that has become the your main focus in life for that is your idol.
People in the world need idols for their empty lives, they tend to look to those who are famous or fictional characters etc, but unfortunately all these idols are flawed and will let them down in the end.
Let’s take superman
The words super and man invoke the idea of a man who has reached incredible levels, and is the ultimate role model for our species.
He is better than any other man and we must aim to be like him.
A character with high morals?
How can we compare the morals of superman what yard stick would you use. If we judge by what is acceptable today by society’s values then the way you look to day, would be considerably different from Jesus time.
Even from 100 years ago, from 50 years ago, from 20 years ago in fact society’s principles are moving all the time.
We live in a time of tolerance and the problem is that the more we tolerate the weaker our values become and the more acceptable everything else becomes. When in Jesus time a woman pregnant out of wedlock would have been stoned along with the man and 100 years ago the woman and the man would have been jailed. Today amongst this society it is considered a fashionable thing to do in some areas (shame) and is now deemed by many as being acceptable today as children who are born in God’s Holy Ordinance the union of marriage.
Things are happening today, which are paving the way for another Sodom and Gomorrah. When you lower your morals and values you are allowing Satan to steam roller over and destroy and belittle every institution ordained by God. Namely the institution of marriage between one man and one woman being the God ordained way in which to raise children.
In fact Satan has gone one better, he is not only destroying the very value or concept of family, but is creating instead one-parent families. Thus depriving the children of a balanced upbringing and the other parent a partner.
All of this will destroy and tear down the very fabric of society as we know it today. Jesus said do not judge, and he who is without sin cast the first stone, we cannot judge on our own, but we need to look to the word of God which is UN changing and live by the values Jesus has taught us.
The commandments are a guide to freedom, a real freedom in god’s love. If we allow everything to come in, and accept the fallen values of today’s society then how can we complain when the fall of all things comes upon our children and us? Remember you can always keep it out of your home! The greatest ministry we have all been given is the task of raising our families and children and teaching them the ways of the Lord. So as they grow older they may not depart from it, this is a great ministry in it self. Jesus has raised us all up as a ministry of priests and we must share his love and word daily.
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, {even} the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
The one thing about superman that really intrigued me was, when is superman not superman?
When he put on his suit, the people looked at him, he was unmistakable in that suit, he stood out in a crowd and people looked up to him to see what he was going to do. Do you know what else they judged him on all his actions, how he handled himself, what he said, even if he turned up at all. Now superman is but one man, just one so he can only be in one place at one time. He can be either Clark Kent or Superman at one time. What part does the suit play in this is it to keep his identity secret or to enable the superman part to come out, is superman schizophrenic?
Jesus was both man and God at the same time, understanding our weaknesses and temptations as being one who was tempted himself.
Jesus was perfect all the time and free from sin, He never gave into temptation and he walked perfect before God.
In the role of Clark Kent he is a newspaper reporter for the Global newspaper, and he is married to Louis Lane.
So he is portrayed as a respectable workingman who also goes out as superman and saves people. Clark just happens to be the one writing about superman in the newspaper.
Superman has many powers, he can fly, has x-ray vision, he can swallow huge amounts of water etc, he has incredible strength and resistance to fire in fact he is pretty indestructible.
He is not immortal he ages; he also has a puzzling weakness kryptonite a rock from the planet krypton, his own planet that makes him immobile weak even to the point of death. All the villains need is one piece of this rock and superman is weaker than anyone else on the planet but no human is affected by the kryptonite. I say on this planet because superman is not really a man is he? Apart from his appearance he is an alien, who happens to be here and everyone overlooks this fact.
So where superman originates from he is in fact very weak and not a super hero at all. On earth he appears to be a super hero to us because he has ability’s, which we do not share.
Remember do not look to what your hero possess, or what they can do but look to who they are in Jesus and never put any man or woman above God.
Where Jesus comes from He is not weak but all powerful he sits at the right hand of the father and the earth is His footstool. There is nothing impossible for Him and all things belong to Him, for he is over all things.
Matthew :28:18: And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Rev 1:13 And in the midst of the lamp stands [One] like a Son of Man, clothed with a robe which reached to His feet and with a girdle of gold about His breast.
Rev 1:14 His head and His hair were white like white wool, [as white] as snow, and His eyes [flashed] like a flame of fire.
Rev 1:15 His feet glowed like burnished (bright) bronze as it is refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.
Rev 1:16 In His right hand He held seven stars, and from His mouth there came forth a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full power at midday.
Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as if dead. But He laid His right hand on me and said, Do not be afraid! I am the First and the Last,
Rev 1:18 And the Ever-living One [I am living in the eternity of the eternities]. I died, but see, I am alive forevermore; and I possess the keys of death and Hades (the realm of the dead).
So in superman they put all there trust in this powerful alien to keep them safe? They really knew nothing about him, yet they trust him with their lives, what if he is dangerous?
But what happens when superman is no longer the good guy and decides he has had enough and wants to be the bad guy. The people accept it because they judge him by their own standards and know that any man is ultimately unstable and double minded, and they forgive him when he becomes superman again the good guy. I say good guy because who is good Jesus says only one is good and that is the Father.
Jesus is also God and his ways are higher than our ways.
God’s standards do not change they remain the same as his judgments towards us are true because they are based on firm foundations.
Also as Jesus is UN changing the promises that he made to us will not change neither will his attitude towards us. Jesus tells us that God is love Jesus tells us to love one another
People always look for heroes they all need a role model to base their lives upon to look to for guidance. Ultimately worldly heroes become corrupt and when people see their weaknesses they turn away. In reality the people would not have forgiven superman, neither would any society have accepted him in the first place.
Superman had no supernatural powers all his power is based in the physical world and all needs are based on the flesh, superman may not be a man but he is still carnal with carnal needs. He helps people in their immediate need situation, but cannot help people in there life situation. Superman can only meet the need as to saving from danger, he cannot offer salvation, hope, love in fact what has superman done for society that makes him so super. What has your hero done for you personally? has he taken the time out of his day, to stop and speak with you? Could you write or phone him at any time and expect a reply or him to be there?
How far would your hero go for you, would he come to your aid support you through your trial, heal your broken heart. Would he pay for your sins, would he die for you as Jesus did, would he love you as Jesus did?
But heroes are only human, so why do people invest their life following someone else who lives by such worldly standards? When that person falls what right do they have to be disappointed or feel that there hero has let them down?
Superman like any hero is a private person, who would prefer to keep to themselves, when not performing and stay unreachable.
Even when they are performing you are still kept at a distance, from your hero. Your hero does not have the time or the interest to invest in you. Truth is that famous people are really images created to sell things etc.
Like superman they come out in costume, whatever that may be football kit etc. Then when not performing in the star light they complain about having no privacy, are they not entitled?
People look up to a powerful hero, but when the temptations that come with fame, drugs, sex etc over power those who are weak and they fall. Can people not forgive their weakness as easily as they accepted their strengths?
What people saw as weakness in Jesus with his capture, the way he was treated by the Romans, did not they also turn there back on Him because he did not do what they wanted. Which was to lead the army of the zealots against the Romans?
Jesus came to destroy sin and death and not mere flesh and blood and he succeeded at Calvary on the cross. Yet his victory was seen as failure.
A Hero relationship is a love relationship, we make them the center of our lives, with posters etc. We follow them we want to know all about them become part of there lives, but then when they fail – we walk away.
The very people that fame created it destroyed, they were weak and fell and we walked away, that says something about the weakness of our hero and us.
Jesus is not superman for many reasons namely unlike superman Jesus was all man and all God at the same time. Jesus came to us in the flesh and walked amongst his own people yet they rejected him.
Jesus came to the people with love to make a away to the Father; he didn’t come to rescue them so much from immediate danger but from the eternal danger. Jesus came to meet also there physical and emotional needs, the blind, the deaf, the lame, the sick and those lost in sin. He came not just to open the physical eyes of the people but also there spiritual eyes. Jesus unlike superman came to set us free, not just from present physical problems but to release us from the power of sin and death by dieing on that cross for you and me. Jesus also rose from the dead, Jesus also fed the 5000, Jesus also walked on water and Jesus was both man and God. He is seated at the right hand of the Father and He is coming again soon hallelujah. He also Loves you and me and wants the best in our lives, He is our councilor and friend and He has promised to never leave us, or forsake us.
Jesus is only a word away!
Do not put others on pedestals from which they will surely fall, love one another and accept each others weaknesses as Jesus has accepted you.
Remember do not follow your brothers sin or you will both fall, but point out to him his sin that he may live. When a brother falls lift him up, believe the best in him, there is only one hero you need to build your life upon and his name is Jesus Christ – Amen.
God Bless
